Recipes for Naan Dipping Sauces


There are few things as delicious as hot naan, straight off the thawa. Now serve a few dipping sauces alongside and your guests will be eating their fingers off.

Tamarind sauce is one of the more popular, known for its sweet and tangy flavor.

Here are recipes for a few different types of dipping sauces which are spectacular when served with naan.

1. Tamarind Sauce

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 cup tamarind paste
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp red chili powder
  • Instructions:
  1. Combine tamarind paste, sugar, and water in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add cumin, salt, and chili powder. Simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  4. Allow to cool before serving. Adjust sweetness or tartness by adding more sugar or tamarind.

2. Mint-Coriander Chutney

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1 cup fresh coriander (cilantro) leaves
  • 1-2 green chilies, deseeded
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons water (as needed)
  • Instructions:
  1. Blend all ingredients in a food processor until smooth.
  2. Adjust salt and lemon juice to taste.
  3. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

3. Yogurt Dip (Raita)

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 small cucumber, finely grated and excess water squeezed out
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder, roasted
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of paprika or chili powder (optional)
  • Instructions:
  1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl until well combined.
  2. Chill for about 30 minutes before serving.

4. Garlic Sauce

  • Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Instructions:
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until smooth.
  2. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

These sauces pair beautifully with naan, enhancing its flavor and adding variety to your meal.
